The group of 2017 at "Saline de Giraud"

Little Egret (Seidenreiher), black beak, black legs and yellow toes (if not dirty as here)

Cattle Egret (Kuhreiher), Short neck, yellow beak and greyish legs. Note the yellow/orange feathers on head, breast and back.

Great Egret (Silberreiher), much bigger than the other two, black beak (during breeding time, otherwise yellow) and dark legs

Sqacco Heron (Rallenreiher), small, yellow to light brownish, beak blue with dark tip

Purple Heron (Purpurreiher), head and neck reddish brown, dark body

Grey Heron (Graureiher),

Spoonbill (Löffler), all white with black legs. Characteristic black bill with yellow tip.

Coot (Blässhuhn), dark grey with black head, white forehead and beak

Common Moorhen (Teichhuhn), dark with red forehead, red beak with yellow tip, green legs and toes

Avocet (Säbelschnäbler), black and white with characteristic upcurved bill

Black-winged Stilt (Stelzenläufer), long pink legs, long thin black bill, black above and white below

Greater Flamingo (Rosaflamingo), mostly pinkish white, but the wing coverts are red and the primary and secondary flight feathers are black. Pink bill with a black tip. Legs are entirely pink

Young flamingo, mostly grey with black flight feathers. Bill is yellow with black tip and legs are black

Mute Swan (Höckerschwan), orange bill with pronounced black knob atop the beak

Caspian Tern (Raubseeschwalbe), biggest tern, as big as a gull. Compare size of the common terns. Black legs, gig red bill with dark tip, white head with black cap

Common Tern (Flussseeschwalbe), black cap, orange-red legs, and a narrow pointed mostly red bill with a black tip

White-cheeked Tern (Weisswangen-Seeschwalbe), similar as Common Tern, but upper side of wings and back darker grey. Red bill with dark tip

Closer look at the White-cheeked Tern. Note dark grey back and wings, dark cap and white cheek.

Yellow-legged Gull (Mittelmeermöwe), white head, yellow legs, strong, yellow bill with clear red spot. Clear red ring around the eye.

Black-headed Gull (Lachmöwe), in flight, the white leading edge to the wing is a good mark. dark-brown head red bill and legs.

Slender-billed Gull (Dünnschnabelmöwe), white head, dark-red (almost black) bill and legs. Note the light pink throat and breast.

European Goldfinch (Stieglitz), unmistakeable red face. Rest of the head black and white. Black wings with broad yellow bar.

European Serin (Girlitz), upper parts are dark-streaked. Yellow throat and breast, yellow bar above the eye and around the ear.

Sardinian Warbler (Samtkopfgrasmücke), black head, white throat, grey back and red eye.

Wheatear (Steinschmätzer), female is pale brown above and buff below with darker brown wings.

European Eagle Owl (Uhu), big orange eyes, distinctive ear tufts
